Trading and Rebalancing Software Comparison for RIAs
RIAs should compare trading and rebalancing platforms on the same criteria: tax-aware trading, model management, custodian connectivity, exception handling and support. Platforms differ in how deeply each is built in. Check each vendor's current documentation for the criteria that matter to your firm, because features and packaging change.

How We Compare Rebalancing Platforms
The five criteria follow how trading and rebalancing work gets done inside an RIA:
Tax-aware trading. How the platform handles tax lots, loss harvesting, capital gains limits and wash-sale rules when it builds trades
Model management. How models, sleeves and strategies are built and kept aligned across accounts
Custodian connectivity. How orders and position data move between the platform and the custodians
Exception handling. How the platform surfaces accounts that need a person, such as restrictions, cash needs or failed checks
Support. What the vendor says about training, service and onboarding
The source rule is simple. A cell needs a link to the vendor's own current page and the date we read it. When a vendor's page does not address a criterion, the cell says so instead of filling the gap from reviews or third-party sites.
A cell marked "not stated" only tells you the vendor did not say so on the pages we read, so ask about it in a demo.
Side-by-Side Platform Comparison
Each vendor describes its trading product differently. These one-line use cases come from the vendor's own wording:
Vestmark: Trading and rebalancing software that supports firms managing complex portfolios across large numbers of accounts (Vestmark guide, reviewed 10/28/2026)*
Orion: A rebalancing platform for advisor firms operating at volume (Orion Trading, reviewed 10/28/2026)**
Envestnet Tamarac: A wealth management platform with portfolio rebalancing, performance reporting, trading and CRM in one place (Tamarac, reviewed 10/28/2026)***
SS&C Black Diamond: A trading and rebalancing engine for sophisticated structures and strategies, inside the Black Diamond platform (Black Diamond, reviewed 10/28/2026)****

Tax-aware trading
Tax-lot selection, loss harvesting and wash sale logic sit inside trade generation, so decisions come before orders are created.
Household-level rebalancing, asset location optimization and daily tax-loss harvesting. Advisors can adjust tax sensitivity per client and set wash-sale rules.
Main page lists direct indexing, tax overlay and custom models. A 2022 Tamarac blog describes a capital gains budget tool and a harvest-and-rebalance trade type. Tamarac, 10/28/2026; 2022
Strategic asset location and automated loss harvesting. A product brief lists controls for wash sales and capital gains limits. Black Diamond, 10/28/2026****; product brief, 10/28/2026
Model management
Model management is integrated with trading workflows, and whole-account rebalancing covers all sleeves in one session. Model Marketplace access comes through Vestmark's advisory services. Vestmark guide, 10/28/2026*; Vestmark platform page, 10/28/2026
Sleeves split one account into sub-accounts, each managed against its own model or strategy. Orion Trading, 10/28/2026
Main page lists custom models, a proposal tool and unified managed accounts. Tamarac, 10/28/2026
Models use an N-tier architecture with security equivalent tracking. A Model Marketplace and proposal generation sit in the same platform. Black Diamond, 10/28/2026
Custodian connectivity
Real-time or near real-time custodial data inside the trading workflow, with automated discrepancy detection. No custodian list on the page. Vestmark guide, 10/28/2026
Orders flow from one workflow to multiple custodians, which the page describes as the major U.S. advisor custodians. No list on the page. Orion Trading, 10/28/2026
Not stated on the current pages reviewed. The 2022 blog names custodians for closed-lot data sync, so confirm the current list. Tamarac, 10/28/2026
Trades run through the FIX network. An undated product brief cites integrations with 800+ custodians. Black Diamond, 10/28/2026****; product brief, 10/28/2026
Exception handling
Exception-based management identifies, routes and tracks accounts that need attention inside the platform. Vestmark guide, 10/28/2026
Automatic alerts and pre-trade reviews. Pre-trade compliance reviews, which run a configurable rule set against pending orders, are part of the Orion Advantage Stack. Orion Trading, 10/28/2026
Rebalance page status indicators show which accounts need action. Tamarac release note, 10/28/2026
Alerts for cash needs, drift and tax-loss harvesting opportunities, plus secure approval workflows. Black Diamond, 10/28/2026
Support
The guide says new operations staff can run core rebalancing sessions without months of platform-specific training. Vestmark guide, 10/28/2026
The trading page lists Eclipse training events. No support terms are stated. Orion Trading, 10/28/2026
Describes the platform as backed by dedicated support and expertise. No service terms are stated. Tamarac, 10/28/2026
A product brief describes dedicated service and support through the client's own service team. product brief, 10/28/2026
Tax-Aware Trading and Restrictions
All four vendors describe tax-aware features. The differences are in depth and in where the logic runs.
Tax-aware features by vendor
Vestmark: States that loss harvesting and wash-sale logic sit inside trade generation.
Orion: Lists daily harvesting scans with adjustable tax sensitivity and wash-sale rules.
Envestnet Tamarac: The current main page names tax overlay. The fuller description of gains budgets and harvest trade types comes from a 2022 blog, so ask for current documentation.
SS&C Black Diamond: States automated loss harvesting and wash-sale controls.
Restriction handling is less uniform across the four
Vestmark: Says client restrictions, ESG screens and tax budgets are enforced at the trade level.
Black Diamond: Says it aligns trades with client preferences and restrictions.
Orion and Tamarac: The pages reviewed say little about restriction handling, so test it in a demo.
The wash-sale rule applies to every platform
IRS Publication 550, Investment Incomes and Expenses, states that a wash sale occurs when you sell or trade stock or securities at a loss and, within 30 days before or after the sale, buy substantially identical stock or securities, or acquire substantially identical stock for your individual retirement arrangement (IRA) or Roth IRA.
It says losses from a wash sale cannot be deducted, with an exception for dealers.
Custodian coverage is where public pages say the least.
Custodian coverage by vendor
Vestmark: Describes near real-time connectivity without listing custodians.
Orion: Describes multi-custodian connectivity without listing custodians.
SS&C Black Diamond: Gives a count of 800+ custodians in a product brief that carries no date.
Envestnet Tamarac: The current pages reviewed state no custodian coverage.
Portfolio-system connectivity follows each vendor's packaging
Orion: Says its trading product reads from the same source as its reporting and billing for firms on the Orion stack.
Black Diamond: Describes trading as native to its platform.
Tamarac: Presents trading, reporting and CRM together in one platform.
Vestmark: The guide describes coordination with custodians, portfolio management systems, model workflows and reporting tools. The platform page says firms can build around its portfolio management technology or centralize select operational functions.
For how the two categories relate, see trading vs. portfolio management software. Ask each vendor which custodians and which of your existing systems are live today, and for the date of that list.
Which Platform Fits Which RIA
The profiles below match firm situations to criteria. They do not name a winner, because the right answer depends on what your firm already runs.
A firm already standardized on one vendor's accounting and reporting. Start with that vendor's trading product and test the criteria that matter most to you. Orion says trading is available by itself or as part of a stack, while Tamarac and Black Diamond present trading inside a wider platform
A firm running multi-sleeve accounts with client tax limits. Test tax-aware trading first. Ask each vendor to show how a capital gains limit, a restriction and a wash-sale check interact in one rebalance
A firm with several custodians. Test custodian connectivity first. Ask for the live custodian list and how position data reaches the trading screen A firm with a small operations team. Test exception handling and support first. Ask how many accounts a rebalance session processes and what a person reviews afterward
A firm that wants to outsource trading. Compare the outsourcing options each vendor describes, including Vestmark's investment advisory services, Black Diamond Managed Account Services and the Orion Trade Desk
Use the same five criteria with every vendor on your shortlist, and ask each to show them on your own accounts. Vestmark's evaluation criteria guide lists what to test.

Important Disclosures: This page is for general information. It is not investment, tax or legal advice, and it does not address the circumstances of any specific client. Information about Orion, Envestnet Tamarac and SS&C Black Diamond comes from those companies' public web pages and documents as of the dates shown. Vestmark has not verified it with those vendors. It may be out of date or incomplete, and the vendors may change features, packaging and availability without notice. All trademarks belong to their owners, and their mention does not imply endorsement or affiliation. Platform capabilities and integrations vary by client configuration and custodian, and may change. Tax-aware trading strategies may be unable to fully realize strategic gains or harvest losses, and tax rules such as the wash sale rule limit loss harvesting. Investing involves risk, including loss of principal; past performance does not guarantee future results.
How do trading and rebalancing platforms differ for RIAs?
They differ in tax logic, model handling, custodian reach, exception workflows and support. The table above compares four vendors on those five criteria, using each vendor's public pages. Some platforms bundle trading with reporting and CRM, while others focus on trading and connect to other systems.
Which criteria matter most for a growing RIA?
As a general view, account volume, custodian mix and tax complexity decide most shortlists. A firm adding hundreds of accounts feels exception handling first. A firm with taxable clients feels tax logic first. Rank the five criteria by where your team spends manual time today.
Do rebalancing tools work with multiple custodians?
Vendor pages describe multi-custodian routing, but they differ in detail. Orion describes orders flowing to multiple custodians. Black Diamond cites 800+ custodian integrations in an undated brief. Verify the current custodian list with each vendor, and confirm it covers the custodians you use.
How often should an RIA review its rebalancing software?
We recommend a review at least once a year and after any change in custodian mix, account count or tax strategy. Check each vendor's release notes at that point, because features and packaging change. Repeat the demo scenarios you used when you first chose the platform.
Can one platform handle both trading and portfolio reporting?
Some platforms combine both, and others connect separate systems. Tamarac and Black Diamond present trading inside a wider platform with reporting, and Orion sells trading by itself or in a stack. Vestmark's platform page says firms can build around its portfolio management technology or centralize select functions. See trading vs. portfolio management software for how to decide.
